When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?

Hi all,

I'm going up to 30 weeks along (first baby - so excited!!) and me and my partner have started buying boxes of newborn nappies (the bulk packs of 108 nappies - huggies brand) and we were wondering how many we should get?

How old was your little one when you had to upgrade to the next size in nappies? How many times a day did you have to change your baby also?

I've been quoted by some to expect to change baby 5-6 times a day, but have gotten no answers on when babies outgrow newborn size nappies on average.

Thanks in advance and congrats to all! When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
so ur in aus i take it....i bought 3 boxes with my 1st and only used 1 %26amp; 1/2 this time i had twins and coz they were small i think i hav gone thru 3 %26amp; 1/2 boxes already n they are only just 3kg, so it really depends on the weight of ur baby coz the nappies are to 5kg but i wouldnt buy more then 2 boxes.....if you find them on special for $30- stock up buy 10 boxes (buy the 6-11kg + up) or more layby if u have to and any sizes that u outgrow you can always swap them for the next size up....gl!

also they say to change ur baby at every feed so depending on whether u bottle or breastfeed bottle is usually 6x coz u feed every 4 hours %26amp; breastfeed can be up to 12 coz some babies eat every 2 hours so u can average it out at about 8-9 changes a day give or take a few, but keep in mind the average baby is between 2.7-3.5kg sso it doesnt take long for them to reach 5kg and i didnt leave mine in them til 5kg coz they are a bit snug as the other poster mentionedWhen did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
My children never fit in Newborn diapers. (one was 8 lbs. 5 oz. and the other was 8 lbs 10 oz.) So, I wouldn't buy too many newborn diapers. Even if they fit in them when they are born the usually outgrow them quickly unless your child is premature or very small.

I would say you could expect to change 6-8 diapers on a newborn, plus at night every time you feed the child. (the number of diaper changes will lessen when the baby gets a little older)When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
i think huggies run a bit smaller than other brands. someone correct me if i'm wrong, though. i use pampers and my son outgrew his newborn diapers at 4 weeks. i am breastfeeding and the most i've had to change him in a day is 11 times, 5 being the least. on average, i change him 6 or 7 times a day. congrats on your little one!! :)When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
Mine did after 2 weeks. Depends on whether you breastfeed or formula feed, my breastfed newborn needed to be changed in the vacinity of 10 times per day. When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
i would say about after a month you should start to expect buying the nixt size. babies don't stay in their newborn things very long. same thing with their clothesWhen did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
3 boxes for us. We changed about 7 times (in 24 hours - as a new mum you will soon forget about day and night...). My baby was 3 kgs.

Congratulations on the new arrival. When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
Babies grow at different rates, so one could be out of newborns a month or so before a baby of the same age. When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
I used cloth part time until my son outgrew the newborn size nappies-I'd been given a few so I felt I really should use up all the disposables. He has been consistently in the 50th percentile since birth and outgrew then around 3 months. If your child is in a higher percentile they will outgrow them sooner, if they are in a lower one they will be in them for longer.

5-6 times a day for nappy changes is extremely low on numbers- I was changing Alex 10- 12 times a day as a newborn! Alex is 7 1/2 months and I still change him 8 or more times a day! You should be aiming for a fresh nappy every two hours during the day and every three hours at night.

Edit- I just read you plan to use huggies- their sizing is smaller than what I used and Alex outgrew huggies newborns at two months. Have a look at what percentile your baby is born in and use that to calculate when they will hit the next size up.When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
I would say only get one box. The newborn size is only for up to 10 pounds, some babies are born that big! They are really designed to be for babies 5-8 pounds, and the average singleton weighs 8 pounds at birth...

Since I am having twins, mine will likely be born at 5 pounds each, so I would expect mine to be in newborn size for a couple months. But most singletons will only be in newborn size for a couple weeks, and some will skip that size altogether, so only get one box.

You can change the baby 4 - 12 times a day. Depends a lot on you, and also on your baby.

Also the hospital will give you some diapers, and you can always run out and get more. IF you get more than one box, make sure you keep a receipt so you can return them. Of course if you give birth in 10 weeks (2.5 months) from now, you may be past the time when you can return them.

If your only having one baby, then 108 nappies will last you 9 - 27 days. It is likely all you will need.

For my twins I bought 150 newborn size diapers to cover the meconium stage plus a few extras, and I have cloth diapers starting at 6 pounds. When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
some babies never fit in newborn diapers. I'd buy size ones, better to be too big. my son wore newborns for a few weeks but he was a small baby. I still have left over newborns. I wish we had just put money aside for diapers instead of buying them a head of time. We ended up with so many extras of each size. My son would hit a growth spurt and the next day his diapers wouldn't fit.

Every baby is different and we went through with way more than 6 a day.

Another thing we discovered was just because they still %26quot;fit%26quot; him, didn't mean they were big enough to hold everything. Right before he would outgrow a size, he would leak like crazy and soak his clothes. When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
My baby girl weighed 6.86lbs when she was born.. She outgrew her NB sized Fitti/Huggies diapers around 3weeks.. She's using S till now.. Don't buy too much NB size diapers..

Different brands have different cuttings.. U'll know to change the size when u see the lines of elastic band etched onto your baby thighs during changing of diapers..

I changed my girl's diapers after EVERY feed, which is at least 2-3 hourly (around 3weeks), regardless of how much or how little she pees.. That's the BEST prevention to diaper rash! xD.. So that's about 10-20 diapers per 24hours.. It's expensive but it's effective.. That's my way of it doing it.. You can do it your way.. hehe..

She's 7weeks now and her feeds lasts longer now, about 4hours and she's started sleeping through the night.. So we're using less now.. XD..When did your baby outgrow newborn nappies?
Well, babies usually need to be changed 6-8 times a day, sometime even more!

As to how long it takes them to out grow, it really depends on the baby.

My bub was 9lb8oz and he only fit into newborn nappies for 3 weeks! But my second cousin was 4lb 5 oz and is now 7 weeks old and still fits into newborn nappies. I would say start off with one box, and if you need more get some. We ended up giving away about 50 nappies because he was just too big :)

It's better to only have a few now and have to go to the shops and buy more than to have bulk loads of them stacked around :)

Congrats on your bub and good luck! :)

that is too hard a question to answer as all babies grow at different rates. if you have a small baby then it will take longer to outgrow small nappies. if you have a big baby then it wont take as long. you wont know till you have it. i wouldnt be buying too many in advance. you will need to change your baby as needed and dont go by what the average is - i aim for 2 hours max unless its not wet by then, usually is though. and sometimes baby maypoop 3-4 times in one day so really there is no answer.

i changed mine at least 12 times in a 24hour period some days and other days not as much. my baby was exrely skinny and so stayed in very small nappies for a long time and only after she was 2 1/2 was she into walker size. at nearly 3 she is only 11kgs and very skinny and out of nappies altogether now.so she didnt even get to the bigger sizes at all.

just have a few boxes on hand (so you dont have to worry in the first weeks) and then go by how your baby is after that. you will know when the time is right to move up a size.

edit - aim for a cheaper brand - they all do the same job and your hip pocket will thank you. i used aldi brand and they are great, just the same quality as huggies for half the cost.
